Detail A. -- Daniel is depicted here as an aged man because by that time its been approximately 66years since he was taken to Babylon during the first exile by Nebuchadnezzar, around 605 ​B​.C. (The lions' den episode occurred after the Persian conquest in 539 BC during the reign of Darius the Mede.) Therefore Daniel would be older than 76 and already had served through the reigns of Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar​ & Nabonidus, and now Darius the Mede. The colour of Daniel's garment is a Babylonian version of purple​ which is mentioned in the Bible (Daniel 5:29​.)

Detail B. -- A prison guard and courtiers watch the scene in disbelief, while King Darius the Mede descends the stairs behind them.
